We have a very busy week ahead of us. The Elsmere Fire Department will visit us on Thursday and Friday is a half day of instruction due to parent conferences. I sent home a reminder of your conference time last week. Please email me if you do not know your conference time or you need to reschedule. I am looking forward to speaking with you about your child.
In reading this week we will begin a new unit on character study. In this unit we will identify character traits and use proof from the text to support our thinking. We will analyze characters' actions, dialogue and conflict to gain a better understanding of the text. During this unit I will read a book to the class and we will analyze it together. We will also work in small groups and analyze our characters in our first guided reading group.
***At home: you can support our learning at home by asking your son/daughter to describe the main character in their books. Ask your child to use character traits and to prove their thinking with evidence from the book.
In math we will use our sharp rounding skills to estimate sums. Last week we used a rhyme to help us remember the rules of rounding:
Find the place
Go next door
5 or higher "Add 1 more"
4 or less "STAYS THE SAME"
As you child comes home this week with math homework they will need to round two numbers and then add them to estimate the sum. We will also review how to make an organized list and analyze whether word problems need an estimate or exact answer.
In writing we will continue to develop our personal narratives. We will also begin working on a paragraphing unit. We will discuss the parts of a paragraph and begin using them in our writing.
In language arts we will continue to work on how to use adjectives. This work will help us with our character traits. We will also begin to learn how to use the dictionary this week.
In science we will continue to observe our Wisconsin Fast Plant. We will begin the week by thinning and transplanting to make room for our plants to mature. We will measure our plants and study their life cycle.
